American Association of Plastic Surgeons Affiliation

At its annual meeting, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) installed Dr. Bahman Guyuron as its President, a position he will hold until the next annual meeting in March 2010. Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Guyuron graduated from Tehran University in 1971 and is the association’s first president from a foreign medical school.

A prolific author and considered one of the world’s most innovative surgeons, Dr. Guyuron developed Laser Seal™, which is a transparent occlusive silicone dressing that replaces the traditional adhesive tape dressings used after laser resurfacing. He also “accidently” discovered what has proven to be an effective treatment for migraine headaches while performing plastic surgery about 10 years ago. With this new surgical approach to a painful condition heretofore predominantly treated with medication, incisions made around the migraine sufferer’s head cut muscle and nerve tissue to interrupt the pain signal’s path to the brain. Doctors from all around the world travel to Cleveland every October to be trained in the procedure by Dr. Guyuron.

AAPS strives to advance the science and art of plastic surgery through surgical education, research, scientific presentations and professional interaction. Membership in the association is by invitation only. Candidates must be certified by either the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and must be recognized as having made quality contributions to the field, especially in areas of education, research or clinical excellence.
